Information and resources for families.

These resources are designed to help families supporting children with a sensory impairment. Our Sensory Service staff will endeavour to provide up-to-date and relevant information.

Hearing Loss/Deafness Useful Links

The National Deaf Children's Society (NDCS) has a wealth of resources and advice for deaf children and their families.

Success from the start is the new and revised version of the Early Support Monitoring Protocol for deaf babies and children.  It is an invaluable resource for families of deaf children from birth to three years old and will support you in monitoring your child’s progress.

Action Deaf Youth has programmes for play in the early years as well as advice and activities for older deaf young people.  You can visit their website here.

For support and advice about communication with your deaf baby or toddler (0 – 3), watch this series of short videos produced by the University of Sheffield  Supporting Communication with Deaf Babies and Toddlers

The Let’s Listen and Talk programme is for families who want to help their baby, toddler or pre- school child with hearing loss develop listening, spoken language and communication skills.

Tiny Happy people gives you ideas about Easy ways to boost your baby talk  and tips and advice for Children's Language Development

The Children's BSL Zone has short videos on a wide range of topics.

Cochlear Sound Foundation for Babies and Toddlers provides guidance in developing children’s spoken language through listening.

Advanced Bionics has lots of ideas and resources, for example, how to check your child is listening well enough with his or her cochlear implant and understanding hearing loss.

The Listening Room provides free activities and resources to support the development of speech, language and communication skills.

Braille Bug introduces children to braille. It has simple games and resources to introduce braille to both sighted and children with vision impairment

CVI Scotland help people to understand cerebral vision impairments

The CVI Society website has information and resources about cerebral vision impairment

Sense provide support to children who are deafblind or have other complex disabilities

RNIB Library - RNIB's national library service, offering over 60,000 titles in audio, Braille, giant print, music formats available entirely for free

Calibre audio library  offer a wide choice of books on standard cassettes and MP3 disks, fiction and non-fiction

The Partially Sighted Society provides information, advice, equipment and clear print material for people with a vision impairment
